More than 40 billion dollars were pledged by the international community to implement the Global Strategy for Maternal and Child Health.
"We know what works to save the lives of women and children, and we know that women and children are central to all Millennium Development", said Secretary General of the Ban Ki-moon. "Today we are witnessing the kind of momentum we need for a long time."
The annual monitoring of the MDGs, released last September 15, reported a decline of one third of deaths of women who die due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth, from 546,000 in 1990 to 358,000 in 2008.
There have been notable but the annual rate of reduction of maternal mortality is less than half what it would take to achieve the MDGs by 2015. To achieve them, should be reduced by 5.5% in maternal mortality by year. However, 34% in 20 years, this equates to a reduction of 2.3% per year.
According to the report, each day more than 1,000 women die from these complications. Of these 1,000 women, 570 live in sub-Saharan Africa, 300 in South Asia and five in the high-income countries. The risk of women in developing countries die in childbirth is 36 times higher for women living in developed countries. With
40 billion pledged for the maternal and child health between 2011 and 2015 over 15 million deaths among children under five years can be avoided. The death of 740,000 women from complications following childbirth can be avoided.
The Global Strategy is a roadmap that should identify the necessary policy changes and funding to improve the lives of mothers and children. For example, with these funds, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will provide 80% increase in deliveries attended by trained medical personnel and 70% the number of children under one year fully immunized. Each country with rates of maternal and infant mortality are worrisome benefit fund.
